After school tutoring for your child
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007If your child is struggling in school, then you may wish to consider after school tutoring. This option is one way in which you can help to improve your child’s understanding of academic concepts while also helping him to increase his self-esteem.
Oftentimes children who struggle in school may not have many opportunities to get one-on-one help with what they are learning. This may be because the child is hesitant to ask for the help that they need. It could also be because your child is not getting the help that they need even though they are asking for it because there are too many children in their classroom or because there is not enough time for the teacher to review and repeat lessons that a child is having a difficult time with.
These are just some of the many reasons why a parent may want to look into hiring a tutor at least once a week for additional instruction and one-on-one help for their child. This session can last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes depending upon the age of the child. Of course, the length of the session should not be longer than the childs attention span or else it will not be conducive to their learning. Therefore, whenever you are scheduling the tutoring time, make sure that you keep your childs attention span in mind.
You should also look for individualized tutoring instead of a group session. This will give your child the best chance for succeeding at what they are learning. Of course, if finances are a consideration then at least make sure that your child is somewhere that has less than 4 children per tutor or else they will not get the individualized attention. It is also important to ensure that you are not signing up with a company that is offering homework help. Instead, you want a tutor that is going to re-teach and reinforce skills that your child is not already succeeding in. This is not what you will get with homework help, which will increase your childs grade but not their understanding.
If you do not know where to look for a quality tutor. Of course, your best option is to get a referral from your childs teacher, school board or from other parents. You can also look in the classifieds section at a local college and this is a great option because they are usually younger and thus they are thought of as being cooler than a teacher. Other places to look are online, at churches or you can oftentimes get referrals from homeschooling parents and former teachers. These people may even be willing to provide your child with these services themselves.
After school tutors are a great option for parents who want to help their child succeed in areas in which they are struggling. So, if your child is in need of some help, you should not hesitate to start looking for a tutor now. After all, the longer you wait, the more difficulty they may have.
